Ingredients

  • 1 lb of ground beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1 ¼ cup of milk
  • 1 10 oz can of cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 tsp of garlic salt
  • 1 tsp of onion powder
  • 1 tsp of pepper
  • 1 cup of uncooked egg noodles
  • 1 cup of frozen peas
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Step 1: Preheat and cook the beef - Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with non stick cooking spray and set it aside. In a large pan over medium high heat, add the ground beef and diced onion. Cook until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess grease and return the pan to the stove.
  • Step 2: Mix the creamy sauce - In a medium bowl, add the milk, cream of mushroom soup, garlic salt, onion powder, and pepper. Stir until everything is fully combined and smooth. This is where that classic creamy flavor comes together.
  • Step 3: Combine everything - Pour the sauce mixture into the pan with the cooked beef and onions. Add the uncooked egg noodles and frozen peas. Stir well so everything is evenly coated. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  • Step 4: Bake and add cheese - Cover the baking dish with foil and place it in the oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top, and return the dish to the oven uncovered for another 5 to 8 minutes, just until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Substitutions

  • Ground turkey: Swap the ground beef for ground turkey if you want a lighter option.
  • Cream of chicken soup: Use cream of chicken instead of mushroom for a slightly different flavor.
  • Almond milk: Can replace regular milk if needed, though whole milk gives the richest result.

Variations

  • Vegetable loaded: Add corn, carrots, or green beans for extra veggies.
  • Cheesy blend: Mix cheddar with mozzarella or Colby Jack for a different cheese profile.
  • Seasoned twist: Add a pinch of paprika or Italian seasoning for extra warmth.

Tips and Tricks

  • Drain the beef well: Removing excess grease keeps the casserole creamy instead of oily.
  • Use frozen onions: Frozen diced onions work perfectly and save prep time.
  • Do not overbake: Keep an eye on the cheese so it melts without drying out.
  • Let it rest: A short rest after baking helps everything set up for easier serving.

Serving Ideas

  • Simple side salad: A crisp green salad balances the richness of the casserole.
  • Dinner rolls: Perfect for soaking up every bit of creamy sauce.
  • Steamed vegetables: Broccoli or green beans pair nicely with the hearty bake.

Storage and Make Ahead Tips

  • Refrigerator storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for 2 to 3 days.
  • Reheating: Warm in the oven or microwave until heated through.
  • Make ahead: Assemble earlier in the day and bake when ready for dinner.
  • Portion for lunches: Divide leftovers into individual containers for easy grab and go meals.
