Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish - Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9 by 13 inch baking dish. You do not need a heavy coating of grease because there will be plenty of sauce in the pan, but a light layer makes cleanup easier later. I like getting the oven heated before I start assembling everything because the rest of the recipe comes together quickly.
Step 2: Build the French Onion Sauce - Pour the condensed French onion soup into the bottom of the baking dish, then stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Spread the mixture across the bottom so the chicken will have sauce underneath it as it bakes. That little bit of Worcestershire may not look like much, but it gives the onion sauce a deeper, more savory taste.
Step 3: Arrange and Season the Chicken - Place the chicken breasts on top of the sauce in a single layer. Sprinkle them evenly with the kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Try to get some seasoning across every piece instead of concentrating it in one spot. If your chicken breasts are extremely thick, you can gently pound the thickest portion so they cook more evenly.
Step 4: Add the Creamy Onion Layer - Divide the French onion dip among the four chicken breasts and spread it across the top of each piece. You do not have to make this layer beautiful. Just give each chicken breast a good coating. As it heats, the dip softens into the soup underneath and creates that thick, creamy sauce that makes this dinner so satisfying over mashed potatoes or noodles.
Step 5: Make the Buttery Crouton Topping - Melt the butter and toss it with the lightly crushed garlic croutons until the pieces are coated. Sprinkle the crouton mixture over the chicken and around the baking dish. I like leaving the croutons a little chunky because those larger pieces get crisp around the edges while soaking up just enough sauce underneath.
Step 6: Cover and Bake the Chicken - Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes. At that point, check the chicken with an instant read thermometer in the thickest section. If the chicken still needs more time, continue baking until it is nearly cooked through. Larger chicken breasts may need another 10 to 15 minutes. You want the chicken to reach a safe internal temperature of 165°F by the time the dish is finished.
Step 7: Add the Provolone Cheese - Remove the foil and place two slices of provolone over each chicken breast. Try to position the cheese so it covers most of the chicken while still letting some of those buttery croutons peek through. Return the dish to the oven briefly if needed so the chicken can finish cooking before you switch to the broiler.
Step 8: Broil Until Golden - Turn on the broiler and watch the dish closely while the cheese melts and begins to brown. This usually takes only a minute or two, and I stay right by the oven because melted cheese can go from beautifully spotted to overly dark very quickly. You are looking for bubbling provolone with a few golden areas and crisp edges on the croutons.
Step 9: Finish With Crispy Onions - Take the baking dish out of the oven and sprinkle the crispy fried onions over the top. Adding them now instead of early in the baking process keeps them light and crunchy. That crisp onion topping is one of my favorite parts because it gives every serving a little extra texture.
Step 10: Add Parsley and Serve - Finish the French Onion Chicken Bake with chopped fresh parsley and let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before serving. That short rest gives the juices inside the chicken a chance to settle and lets the sauce thicken slightly. Spoon plenty of sauce from the bottom of the pan over each serving because nobody at my table wants to leave that part behind.
