Ingredients

  • pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 small head cabbage chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 15-ounce jar Alfredo sauce
  • ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Step 1: Season and Set the Chicken Base - Place the chicken breasts into the slow cooker in a single layer. Sprinkle the salt, black pepper, and garlic powder evenly over the top. Give it a quick rub with your hands if you want to make sure the seasoning sticks.
  • Step 2: Add the Cabbage Layer for Texture - Add the chopped cabbage right on top of the chicken. Do not worry if it looks like a lot at first. It will cook down quite a bit as it softens.
  • Step 3: Pour in the Creamy Alfredo Mixture - Pour in the chicken broth, heavy cream, and Alfredo sauce. Try to spread it evenly so everything gets coated. You do not need to stir at this stage.
  • Step 4: Slow Cook Until Tender and Flavorful - Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for four to five hours. This is where the magic happens. The chicken becomes tender and the cabbage soaks up all that creamy flavor.
  • Step 5: Shred and Bring Everything Together - Once the cooking time is up, use two forks to shred the chicken right in the slow cooker. It should pull apart easily. Stir everything together so the chicken, cabbage, and sauce are well combined.
  • Step 6: Finish with Parmesan for a Creamy Finish - Add the shredded Parmesan cheese and stir until it melts into the sauce. Let the dish sit for about five to ten minutes before serving so the sauce can thicken slightly.

Notes

Substitutions

  • Chicken thighs: Swap in chicken thighs if you prefer a richer and slightly more tender meat
  • Half and half: Use half and half instead of heavy cream for a lighter version
  • Fresh Alfredo sauce: Homemade Alfredo can replace jarred for a more from scratch flavor
  • Vegetable broth: Works in place of chicken broth if that is what you have on hand

Variations

  • Add bacon: Cooked and crumbled bacon adds a smoky richness that pairs beautifully with the creamy sauce
  • Add vegetables: Mushrooms or spinach can be stirred in for extra flavor and nutrition
  • Serve over pasta: Turn it into a heartier meal by serving it over your favorite pasta
  • Add herbs: Fresh parsley or thyme can brighten up the final dish

Tips and Tricks

  • Chop cabbage evenly: Keeping pieces similar in size helps everything cook at the same rate
  • Do not overcook: Check around the four hour mark to avoid drying out the chicken
  • Add cheese last: Stirring in Parmesan at the end keeps the sauce smooth and creamy
  • Let it rest: A short rest time helps the sauce thicken and settle before serving
  • Taste before serving: Adjust salt and pepper at the end if needed

Serving Ideas

  • With crusty bread: Perfect for soaking up all that creamy sauce
  • Over pasta: Turns this into a classic Alfredo style dinner with a twist
  • With rice: A simple base that lets the flavors shine
  • Alongside a salad: Adds a fresh contrast to the rich dish
  • As a standalone bowl: It is hearty enough to enjoy all on its own

Storage and Make Ahead Tips

  • Refrigerate leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days
  • Reheat gently: Warm on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of broth or cream if needed
  • Make ahead prep: Chop the cabbage and season the chicken ahead of time to save a few minutes
  • Do not overheat: Gentle reheating helps maintain the creamy texture of the sauce
