Total Time:6 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup of chicken broth
  • 2 6 oz boxes of chicken stuffing mix
  • 1 12 oz jar of chicken gravy
  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 1 10 oz cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 12 oz bag of frozen green beans
  • Crispy fried onions for topping

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Slow Cooker - Spray an eight quart slow cooker generously with non stick cooking spray. This helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup much easier later.
  • Step 2: Season the Chicken - Lay the chicken breasts evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle the garlic salt, onion powder, and paprika evenly over the chicken so every piece is well seasoned.
  • Step 3: Mix the Stuffing Layer - In a large bowl, combine the chicken broth, chicken stuffing mix, and chicken gravy. Stir until everything is evenly moistened and combined. Spread this mixture evenly over the seasoned chicken.
  • Step 4: Add the Creamy Layer - In a medium bowl, stir together the sour cream and cream of mushroom soup until smooth. Spread this mixture gently over the stuffing layer, covering it completely.
  • Step 5: Slow Cook - Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for five to six hours. The chicken will become tender and the casserole will thicken beautifully as it cooks.
  • Step 6: Add the Green Beans - During the last hour of cooking, add the frozen green beans and gently spread them throughout the casserole. Replace the lid and continue cooking until the beans are heated through.
  • Step 7: Finish and Serve - Once fully cooked, scoop the casserole onto plates and sprinkle crispy fried onions on top if using. Serve warm and enjoy every comforting bite.

Notes

Substitutions

  • Turkey gravy: You can swap chicken gravy for turkey gravy for a holiday inspired twist.
  • Turkey stuffing mix: Turkey stuffing works just as well and adds seasonal flavor.
  • Canned green beans: Drain very well before adding if using canned instead of frozen.
  • Greek yogurt: Plain Greek yogurt can replace sour cream for a lighter option.

Variations

  • Cheesy version: Add shredded cheddar or mozzarella during the last thirty minutes for extra richness.
  • Vegetable boost: Stir in sliced mushrooms or carrots for added texture and nutrition.
  • Herb flavor: Add dried thyme or parsley to enhance the savory profile.
  • Crunch topping: Mix fried onions with crushed crackers for an extra crispy finish.

Tips and Tricks

  • Even layering: Keep layers even so everything cooks at the same pace.
  • Low and slow: Cooking on low gives the best texture and flavor.
  • Do not over stir: Let the layers stay mostly intact for the best casserole consistency.
  • Rest before serving: Let it sit for ten minutes to thicken before scooping.

Serving Ideas

  • With dinner rolls: Soft rolls are perfect for soaking up the creamy sauce.
  • Over mashed potatoes: Spoon the casserole over mashed potatoes for extra comfort.
  • With a simple salad: A crisp green salad balances the richness.
  • Holiday plate: Serve alongside turkey or ham for an easy side main combo.

Storage and Make Ahead Tips

  • Refrigerate leftovers: Store in an airtight container for two to three days.
  • Reheat gently: Warm in the microwave or oven until heated through.
  • Make ahead: Assemble everything except the green beans and cook when ready.
  • Add topping fresh: Always add fried onions right before serving for best texture.
